3 Environmentally Friendly Ways to Clean

March 11, 2008 · 2 Comments

As a mom to 3 young children, I have become sensitive to what I use as cleaners in my home.  I have eliminated MOST not all (yet) toxic chemical cleaners and have replaced them with more environmental/green products.

Here are 3 things I use to green clean my home:

** Use Vinegar — as I have found out, vinegar is an all-natural solution to clean and deodorize your home.  Now you don’t have to use irritating and smelly chemicals to clean your home.  I use vinegar when I wash my children’s clothing, I use vinegar to clean calcium build up in my bathroom.  There are also many more uses of vinegar I haven’t tried.

**  Baking Soda — use it to eliminate odor (I use it on my carpets) and may be used as a gentle scouring powder

**  Borax — great for eliminating odor, removing dirt.  Do keep out of reach of children as it is toxic if swallowed.

 How do you green clean?

I’m not as environmentally clean as you (yet), but I’m a fan of cleaning with vinegar too.

One of my favorite uses for it is cleaning our stainless steel kitchen sink. I sprinkle the sink with baking soda, slice a fresh lemon in half, squeeze the juice of the lemon around the sink, and add a splash or two of vinegar. I use the lemon halves to scrub the sink and then I wipe the sink down with a sponge and rinse it out. Sometimes I grind the lemons in the garbage disposal to get rid of any odors.

The sink sparkles and smells great. Plus, I haven’t used any chemicals to do it.

    Andrea,

I do exactly the same thing with my sink. Especially with garburators — they tend to smell after a while and I do the lemon thing and it’s odorless again.

    Thanks for your tips!
